Who we are
Nick Bateman formed QR Ventures in 2001 with a primary purpose of rescuing businesses in difficulty.
Nick is a qualified banker and accountant, has worked at senior levels within ICI PLC and Zeneca PLC growing technology businesses both in the UK and Overseas, involving a number of situations requiring restructuring, refinancing and rescue.
Over the few years since leaving Zeneca and forming QR Ventures, Nick has turned round an ailing AIM Plc and subsequently sold it saving investors their investment; set up an accelerator company with Oxford Innovation and worked on a number of significant technology businesses.
The business team includes the following section heads:
Penny Davis - a HR expert specialising in developing teams, change and transition management and scaling SMEs for growth.
Penny is CIPD qualified with an MSc in HR, she began her career working in management in the medical industry before moving into HR. She has consulted for several SME’s, project include implementation of policies, processes and system to support growth and designing and delivering training. Penny is experienced in working with family and founder led firms.
Penny is also a recognised and registered Growth Coach for GrowthAccelerator.
In her spare time, Penny enjoys spending time with her husband, daughter and cats. She also enjoys making art, and meditation.
Fiona is experienced at writing multi-million GBP external funding bids for economic development, innovation, research and development on behalf of NW SME’s. She has extensive experience gained managing numerous transnational EU projects liaising directly with the European Commission. During her work in regional government Fiona has supported the business and innovation strategies of over 6,000 SMEs on issues covering: European trade; R&D; innovation and business advice; trade missions and exhibitions. She has helped secure specialist grants of up to £7M for SMEs and regional bodies.
The business has a large number of mentors and consultants who work on specific projects and with specific specialties.
David Richardson is a experienced accountant and treasurer with a background of working within growing technology businesses.
David began his career at ICI / Zeneca but has more recently worked with a number of university spin out companies where he has held board positions. Working with small emerging companies, David has been exposed to the challenges such companies face; developing business plans, establishing appropriate processes, raising finance, and subsequently delivering the plan. David is a registered and approved Growth Accelerator coach.
In his spare time, David enjoys family time with his wife and teenage children (triplets). His other interests include cycling and golf.
Nick is a Chartered Accountant with a law degree. His career background includes working in industry and the public sector.
Originally qualifying with KPMG (as it is now known) in London, his financial and commercial industrial experience includes distribution of electronic and engineering components as well as in the printing industry, whose current fate he anticipated. He has served at board level in industry and in the public sector where he was an NHS Primary Care Trust (PCT) Chair for six years. As well as financial skills he has a had a lifelong interest in business strategy, and recently undertook the ILM Level 7 certificate in Executive Coaching and Mentoring for Leadership. He is an accredited Growth Accelerator Coach.
Nick is married with ten grandchildren and he and his wife enjoy exploring odd bits of France and Spain in his folding caravan.
Rich is an experienced Commercial Banker, having worked with a wide range of businesses since 1996.
Rich has a sound knowledge of various debt funding options as well as contacts in the industry and is now working as a self-employed Business Growth Consultant, supporting businesses through a variety of scenarios, from challenging times to growth phases.
Rich uses his relationship management skills to understand your business, assess risks and offer fit for purpose solutions to support your aspirations. Businesses supported range from start-ups to multi-million pound businesses with overseas operations.
Rich is married with two daughters. In his ‘spare’ time Rich is Chair of Finance at a Junior School and is a Non Executive Director of We Make Places, a Community Interest Company with the aim of engaging and making the lives better of Liverpool better! He enjoys hosting a monthly quiz and supports a local FoodBank whenever he can.
Alistair Cooke has worked in the design industry for many years, in the role of Creative Director, Senior Art Director and designer and as an independent design consultancy. Alistair has extensive experience of creating and delivering innovative and appropriate design communications solutions across a broad range of project types and sectors.
Since 2003, Alistair has worked as a consultant, providing marketing and creative consultancy and services to managing directors and marketing teams, working closely with businesses to determine the right brand and marketing strategies and providing appropriate solutions and services to position correctly in their market and achieve growth. Specific services include Branding, website design and development, Marketing and information literature, advertising and direct mail, packaging and point of sale, exhibition and display and strategic marketing.
He is also a director of a web and creative services and software company and works as a creative director and designer in this role, providing services as above.
Paul Jackson works as an academic, consultant and trainer with particular expertise in digital business and SME growth. He has worked with a range of SMEs, charities and public sector bodies in developing and implementing plans for improvement and transformation. Paul spent 9 years with the commercial arm of CIPFA, running projects and advisory services, and supporting public sector improvement and e-Government. He also has more than 10 years experience as an Internet start-up owner. Paul has a PhD in Management Studies from the University of Cambridge and an MSc in Information Management from Lancaster University. He is also a qualified project and programme manager and is a published author and experienced platform speaker.
How We Work
The first contact with the business, whether by email or telephone is reviewed and allocated to a personal owner of the relationship. The business team reviews all projects weekly to make sure the full capability of the business is brought to bear on any assignment –whether fund-raising, marketing or business recovery.
